ABOUT:

To reach a goal you sometimes have to make a detour. My goal is Seoul, Korea and my detour is Bangkok, Thailand. In my blog I write about what it can be like to push the pause-button in life, trying to make a temporary existence in a place meaningful and at the same time plan for a more permanent future, sometimes a tough combination disguised as everyday life. My name is Emelie and you are welcome to keep reading.

High Pass

Ok, I understand this is completely geeky what I am about to do. But I do it anyway because it is my blog and I do what I want on it. Remember the exam I had three weeks back? Well, I got the result on it and I recieved a high-pass (VG). In the Swedish university grade system you can get fail, pass and high-pass for those of you that have no clue what I am talking about right now. It feels good and I am proud. It is not like it was super difficult but it was about proving something to myself. I haven’t done an exam for like three years so to me this was a pretty big deal. And now I can say I succeeded. And it makes me a lot more motivated to keep going. I am hoping that posting it here will make me remember this achievment those days I am not so motivated.

The Ocean

Then we moved on to that seaside town to eat some fish and watch the ocean. Six months in Thailand and I have finally seen the ocean now.

I felt like being a tourist so I posed with a seagull, this place is famous for them

The long pier

The ocean!

The clouds acting strange with a halo around it

We went out to the end of the pier and sat down at one of the restaurants. It wasn’t really first class with plastic furniture and pepsi decor, but there was fish on the menu and an ocean breeze in the air. The food tasted pretty good and when the check arrived it was cheaper than we thought it would be. Instead of getting on a bus home we therefor took a cab. It only took 45 minutes and cost us 200 baht. If we had known that the ocean was only 200 baht away we probably would have done this sooner. But now we know for next time. But next time I want there to be a beach too…

The Elephant Museum

I was by the pool on Saturday when H came down and asked if I wanted to go to a seaside town and some museum called Erawan. Hungry for a day trip I thought it was a good idea. The bus to the museum took about an hour and when we arrived it was already too late to go inside this huge three headed elephant. But we were able to walk around the temple area which was just as nice I think.

The huge elephant viewed from the entrance

Close up

All three heads

A little miniature elephant shrine thing

Can you see me? I am scratching my arm where I just got a bite

The place was really beatiful and calm. It was a nice destination, away from the guidebook attractions. Even though the freeway was right next to this place it still felt like we were far from everything else. I could even hear birds sing, something you don’t hear too often in the big city.

Brown Sugar Night

The band

Classy drink stick

Wednesday night we went to Brown Sugar, a very nice jazz bar here in Bangkok. H has a friend from Korea visiting Thailand at the moment so we met up with him and two other Koreans that he travels with. H and I haven’t been to Brown Sugar since Valentine’s Day a couple of years ago. They serve real drinks and have good quality live music which is a combination I much appreciate. I ordered a White Russian and it was so good that I quickly thought to myself that I don’t drink nearly as much as I should. I probably drink once a month, if even that. Anyway, soon after we arrived the band came on and started to play and after 15 minutes of instrumental music the singer arrived. She was an older woman but the charm she brought to the stage was unbelievable. And she sang without an accent which was a huge surprise to me. After about twelve or so songs, and many beers for H’s friends we took a cab back home again. It was nice to get out and do something for one night, and to hear some good jazz and some familiar Korean. And I wouldn’t mind another White Russian some day soon.

New Face

I am feeling a lot better today. Six months and a day is less scary than six months even for some reason. I am also rockin my new dress. I have a friend in Sweden, well friend and boss but more friend cause I sometimes tell him what to do, who complains that I always have the same expression in all the pictures of me. Although I think that isn’t entirely true this picture is posted purely to show him I have more faces than one. By the way, I have no problem raising my left eyebrow but it is impossible to do it with the right one. What does that mean? I remember having a drama teacher as a kid who could raise her eyebrow and I wanted to be like her so I practiced until I could do it. I guess I gave up after succeeding with one and moved on to learning something else..

Like I told you I don’t have a mirror that covers the whole body but I did my best still to get a shot of the dress so you can see it on.

Nevermind all the clutter on the desk… And to you Korea-fans out there, can you tell what it is that is hanging from my camera? Look now before I reveal… It is my T-money card! Haha… six months away from Korea and I haven’t taken off my subway card yet. Lazy? Nah, I call it wishful thinking.

Six Months

My broken but functioning watch

Today it is six months since we landed at the airport here in Bangkok. Six long months I would like to add. A lot has happened since we got here, but at the same time I feel like nothing has. My routine hasn’t changed much and I don’t really get out there and experience all of it. I hold back. So time has gone by slowly, but at the same time it feels strange that it is already May.

I wonder how long it will be until we give up on this. Until we can give up on it. H seems to like it here more than I do and I can see why. But every day is a bit of a struggle for me, and I hate to admit that to myself even. And I hate to write about it on my blog. I am, or used to be, a very happy and positive person so to complain this much just isn’t my style. Especially to all you readers who might find it more interesting to read about what life in Bangkok is like. But if I were to make a list to myself of the good things and the bad things about living here the list of negatives would be longer. How long can anyone live like that I wonder? How much longer can I?

Another bad thing about not liking where you are is that anywhere else seems so much better. “The grass is greener” kind of thing. All of a sudden I am homesick for both Sweden and Korea and that feeling is still pretty new to me. Even as a kid I had no problem leaving home for camps or sleep overs. But right now I believe I think of potatoes about as much as a teenage boy thinks about sex. That is how extreme my homesickness has become. I would like to clock my potato-thoughts just to see how much of my time they occupy.

In university there was lecture I went to where the speaker talked about the American election. This was back in -04. He asked the audience who had lived in the U.S. and he drew the line for living at six months. I could raise my hand that time.

Today it is six months for Thailand. I am not a visitor. I live here.

Wedges

And here are the shoes also (standing on my Thai Air blanket). I feel like I played it a little safe in getting these. But I can’t unfortunately afford to buy ten pairs, even with Thai prices, so I had to get something that could go with most of my outfits. I think these do and do a good job looking good on their own too. Now all I need is a party invitation or something, so I have an event to wear all these new things to…

One

This is the dress out of the three that I like the most. It is just very different from anything else in my closet so that is probably why I like it. But it might also change. Always when I buy more than one of something I have my beginner favorite and then as I start wearing the things I change my mind and start liking something else better. But this is a good one. Colorful and crazy. Like me?

Two And Three

I just got back from the gym and started setting up for the picture taking so you get to see what I bought yesterday. It is really hard to photograph clothes I just realized, and I have no mirror to show them on me either so this will have to do.

This one I like a lot, it has brown in it too which you can’t see too well from this photo. Brown and pink and blue is nice and the pattern is just super girly.

This dress is the one I’m not at all sure about. It does look better on than on the hanger, but still, I don’t know if I like it or not. There is just something about it that feels old. But maybe if it is styled more youthful it can be pulled off.

Mall Success

It has been an exciting day of shopping for me today. Although it started out rough, with being stuck in a traffic jam for what seemed to be forever, it quickly got better from there. I went back to the mall where I bought a dress a few months ago. The lady in the store even recognized me and we had a long discussion about models, prints and colors before I finally decided on getting three new dresses. The thing is that I really like the model of my old dress, but how fun can it be to have the same dress in just different prints? So I compromised. One of the new dresses is very similar to my old one, another one has a new print so I don’t think you would notice it is the same model, and the third is a different model altogether. After picking these dresses the lady showed me another model that she told me could be worn also if I were to become pregnant. Weird. I told her it wasn’t going to happen and she changed the subject to asking where I am from instead and then we went on talking about the Swedish royal family. Then it was time to pay her 600 baht and leave.

After this success I switched malls and went to the one next door where they have more shoes and bags instead. It is soooo practical to have the stores divided up by what they sell. And so I went around looking for some wedged heels, especially after having seen a way too expensive pair at the mall in my neighborhood on Monday. I knew I could find a cheaper deal at this place instead. And right I was. So I bought a pair of what I assume is fake suede and they look good on. I haven’t worn heels in forever, but they make such a difference on one’s posture. I think I will wear them a lot, they were pretty comfortable too.

Now I am home, and I have already tried it all on and I love the shoes and two of the dresses, the third dress I’m still not sure about. Unfortunately it is already dark out, so I wouldn’t be able to get any good pictures of any of my finds, so that will have to wait until tomorrow.

Oh… and I heard Swedish being spoken. Live. Twice.

Simple

I know I know… You have had to see a lot of pictures of rings lately. But I just can’t help myself. It is just a perfect accessory and helps me stay motivated to keep my nails growing. When the deeper things in life aren’t right, I turn to the lighter things to focus on instead. And that often includes shopping and shiny stuff… Thailand becomes more fun when I feel pretty. Simple as that.

Shoes

A result from the trip to Cambodia was that my shoes broke. I shouldn’t say it was surprising, it was actually about time. I had worn them almost everyday for about 10 months. So on Monday I went to the mall to see about a new pair, I just wanted something plain that goes with everything. I found these above for the excellent price 229 baht. That is less than 10 dollars. The only thing now is that they still hurt a bit, I have trouble wearing shoes with things between the toes. But I think it will only take a couple of days before my feet get used to it. And besides that they are really comfortable. So these will be my new everyday companion. Will they last for ten months?

Cambodia

it has been two days since I visited Cambodia but I have been either too tired or too busy to blog about it. There really isn’t that much to say about it though. We took a three hour bus ride to the border which was just dusty and dirty. Much like you would expect from a border casino town. It felt a little bit like an Asian western movie where everything was centered around a main street. Only people and not horses pulled the goods for the market… But at least the dusty part felt very western.

This above is the friendship bridge with Thai flags halfway and then Cambodian flags halfway. Behind the gate the casinos start to line up.

We went inside one of the casinos cause I had to use the bathroom. Before I snapped this picture. When I came out of the bathroom later a couple of security guys came up to me and said I couldn’t take any pictures. Interesting that they followed me and waited outside the bathroom for me just to tell me that. I kept the picture and am now posting it on the blog just so I can feel a little bit rebelious.

Then we went through immigration and across the border to Cambodia. This is what it looks like. We pretty much just crossed the street from where we were and went to immigration on the other side to get our departure stamps and leave. I spent about three minutes in Cambodia (it still counts though). I think it is some kind of record for me, for the shortest time I have ever spent in a country. The previous no 1 must have been Finland where I have spent one hour. Three minutes will be hard to beat though. But again.. it still counts as a country I’ve been to. Technically.

On the bus ride home H and I didn’t get seats next to each other. It was funny to see however how quickly he found a new girl to lean on his shoulder… I thought it was pretty cute and just had to make the memory last by taking a picture of it.

So.. would I recommend Cambodia to anyone? Well… pretty hard to say from my experience. But surely I will stay longer myself next time I go there.

Blue Sky

Late last night it started to rain again, and I woke up from thunder at about 9 this morning, so I didn’t think there would be any chance of pool weather today and therefor I slept until noon. But boy was I wrong when the alarm rang for the 14th time (I snooze like no one else) and I peeked behind the bedroom curtain. The sky was clear blue and the pool just as glittery and shiny as yesterday. I got up with a jump and ate my oatmeal so fast I even burned my tongue a little. And then I hurried down to ninth and stretched out on a tanning bed. And there I stayed for about two hours. When the shade started to reach my position I moved to sit under a palmtree instead and open my book like I had promised myself I would. I was able to read for maybe a half hour, until the whole pool area was invaded my Thai and Indian kids who screamed like they had never seen water before. And their parents were busy setting up a bunch of chairs for a party so they weren’t really around to tell the kids to not splash water on me either. Shared spaces is a bit of a problem for us here, as most people in our building seem to lack common sense. I’m not saying the kids should play quietly, but maybe they didn’t have to splash water on me either… I mean, it is a shared space… let’s share it and show respect, no? Anyway… I gave it another fifteen minutes or so before I realized my concentration wasn’t the best with what was going on around me. But at least I got a couple of hours of sun and peace before all of that, and it gets me feeling so good to have a little bit of sun therapy.

Tomorrow we are going to Cambodia for the day. I think the rest that I got today will come in handy then. Second new country this year: check! I’m excited.

Work And TV

Wow. 11 hours of working non-stop really gets you tired. I know, cause that is what my day has been like. I took a break to go out and get dinner, but other than that I’ve had my eyes on the computer screen the entire day. I really like my job, especially the freedom of it (being able to do it from Thailand is just uncomparably fantastic). But it sucked a little bit since the pool looked extra glittery-shiny today. There is always tomorrow though, and I have a book for school to read so I might as well read it in the sun, right.

Now I am going to watch the latest episode of Parks and recreation, that show is just steadily growing on me and getting better each week. I love all the characters, which other show can you say that about? None is my answer, there is always someone to like less and my opinion should be right, I watch a lot of TV. I could prove it too: Brita in Community, the sister in Dexter, the dad in United States of Tara, Skyler in Breaking Bad, Tamra in The Real Housewives of Orange County, Rachel, Finn and Quinn from Glee… well you get the picture… all annoying characters. But with Parks and recreation it is all good, and even hard to pick a favorite. They all have a place in it and bring something unique. Why am I still writing this? I should just press play… Good night folks!
